we were hosted in finland by friends we had met in 2003 in new zealand, who later moved to helsinki (as any danish-south african couple would), and whom we accordingly hadn’t seen for about two years. they had gotten married and had a baby in the meantime (the baby being very recent meantime – seven weeks), so we spent most of our time there catching up with them. but they did take us to an outdoor museum of traditional finnish buildings, where we fed and were climbed on by some extremely friendly squirrels (rivaling those in the company gardens!), to the stone church and the downtown area (where we made a pilgrimage to the café tintin tango as recommended by our finnish neighbors), and around the beautiful wooded park near their house . and they organized a traditional sauna evening, introduced us to an excellent new board game, fed us way too much good food, and were just generally lots of fun to be around.
