fear not - the chihuahua of smugness (who sounds like an edward monkton creation) has been subdued. i found his spiky little collar and cinched it up good, so today he will be reduced to making occasional frantic leaps above the windowsill and yapping mostly in a part of the house that is easily ignored.
things are still good in hawaii though! in addition to getting some exciting squid work done, we headed to the local aquarium in the afternoon and then went swimming at a nearby beach, where the water must have been about 75 degrees. although snorkelless, i had goggles on and was able to potter out to the reef to see some nice little fishies, including a female trunkfish, a moorish idol, and - oh, the delight in typing this - several humuhumunukunukuapua'a! (down, cesar, you small yapper-type dog!)
although i did not get any photos worth sharing either at the aquarium or in the sea, i did get suckered into buying a wee souvenir in the aquarium giftshop.
hey - at least i was strong in monterey bay and didn't come home with this guy, however sorely i was tempted!
good people, beware! there is SMUGNESS afoot!
smugness is ugly in all its forms (including gloating and skiting). it is flaunting incarnate, embodying an obscene glee at good fortune that generally does not reflect any manner of fairness. it is seldom quiet or inconspicuous. and yet today it is sneaky, lurking around the corner, insidiously creeping into the spaces between these words, stealthily awaiting its chance to take over my fingers and report that I AM SITTING ON MY OWN BALCONY ON THE THIRTY-ODDTH FLOOR OF A CONDO IN HONOLULU, before i can regain control of the narrative and tell you more moderately that the pebbles and i enjoyed a smashing week in san francisco (to which nearly two weeks of online slackness can testify... but i promise there are many accumulated posts in my head waiting to see the pixels of day).
in between ruminations on the hushed atmosphere behind the scenes at the california academy of sciences and on the cerebral joys of admiring the local flora in each new stop along this trip, the smugness would like to shout from the rooftops that it is 80 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT AT 9:08PM WHICH IS WARM ENOUGH TO SIT OUTSIDE IN ZEBRA PAJAMAS, and before i can entirely intervene, it would also like you to know that THERE ARE WILD PARROTS AND MONGOOSE HERE AND TOMORROW WE ARE GOING TO THE AQUARIUM AND THE BEACH.
sadly for the smugness, my self-control will prevent it from flapping its hands excitedly and squealing that THERE ARE COCONUT TREES EVERYWHERE AND I WAS GIVEN A LEI AT THE AIRPORT. it will also be forced into meek submission before it ever has a chance to blurt out that I ATE FRIED GREEN TOMATOES AT AN OUTDOOR MARKET THIS MORNING WHERE FLORISTS WERE SELLING DOZENS OF ORCHID SPECIES.
poor little smugness. you never stood a chance.
