while researching this trip, we learned that we could take a ferry across the baltic to tallinn, so we actually spent our last day in finland… in estonia. we were’t quite sure we’d made the right choice at first; the walk from the ferry to town felt a little bleak and eastern-blockish, but walking through one of the many gates into the old town center was a magical transition. suddenly we were in a medieval-feeling maze of narrow cobblestone streets full of interesting architecture, artisans’ shops and trade stalls, colorful pigeons and pedestrians of all kinds. we could have spent much longer there than we had allowed, photographing the many red-roofed towers along the city wall, eating at least three more meals at the olde hansa restaurant in the main square (lit only by candles and served by staff in medieval garb), and completing a respectably high proportion of this year’s christmas shopping.
