the last stop on our joint travels is germany. we started just over the border from belgium in aachen, with another friend showing us around town, where we admired town hall, a very impressive band of street musicians, and the cathedral and its religious relics (including, apparently, the dress worn by mary at the birth of jesus; hair from john the baptist and the cloth in which his severed head was wrapped (mm, yummy); a rib from st stephen; and many different pieces of charlemagne (left arm, femur, cranium, etc.), all in different ornate display cases). we also went to the dreiländerplatz, where the borders of germany, the netherlands and belgium all touch. we drove up at night through the thickest fog i’ve ever been in (visibility less than 5m), so the whole place had an eerie, surreal feel to it. we almost didn’t find the obelisk marking the highest point in the netherlands (300-odd meters above sea level – lower than the sky tower).
